Last year, the BikeBoard was featured in packaging and advertisements for Kraft Foods' Capri Sun fruit drinks. Now, the BikeBoard is appearing on boxes of Kraft Foods' Macaroni & Cheese.

The BikeBoard's prominence in Kraft's packaging and advertising speaks to the product's success. George Davison, CEO of Davison, is delighted to see the company's product on the back of Kraft's famous blue and yellow boxes. "It just amazes me to see our product there, on a box of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, illustrated with all of the vibrancy and playfulness that makes it so distinctive," says George Davison.

Davison, a Pittsburgh-based product design company, was responsible for creating this novel product. Southern California native, John Iavarone, came to Davison with an idea for a hybrid sport product that could mimic the sensation of surfing. Iavarone's idea was transformed into reality through Davison's trademarked product development process. This skateboard and bicycle hybrid won an Industrial Design Excellence Award (IDEA) from the Industrial Designers Society of America, and was featured in BusinessWeek magazine.

Currently manufactured and distributed by The BikeBoard Company, LLC., the BikeBoard is one of Davison's most popular products. It has sold in various sporting goods and toy store chains and has appeared on ABC'S "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," "The Gear Guru," "American Chopper," and in the 2005 remake of "The Bad News Bears."

Davison is a new product development company that helps inventors, corporations and entrepreneurs. The title is fitting for the Pittsburgh-based creative design facility, which is outfitted with a pirate ship, tree house and giant robot. In the recently published book, "The Remarkable... Revealed," the Ripley's franchise features Inventionland among many unique places, people and events from around the world.

Occupying nearly 60,000 square feet, with grassy knolls, larger-than-life trees, an abundance of flowers, and butterflies that flap their wings, Inventionland is unlike any other workspace. New products come to life in Inventionland's "sets." Davison employees sketch out their latest product development ideas in sets related to their particular product class. Toy designers' ideas set sail on the deck of the pirate ship Discovery. Pet product designers ponder inside the Pet Shack, as cookware designers whip up their ideas in the Concept Kitchen. Designers of automotive products let their minds race in the Inventionland Motor Speedway, while sporting goods designers ensnare their thoughts in the Creation Cavern.

Inventionland developed from the remarkable vision of G. Davison, the company's founder and CEO, who believes that creative people thrive in an imaginative environment. Each set was specifically engineered to evoke childhood memories and creative thoughts.

When asked for his opinion of Inventionland, Geoff Tolsdorf of the Schroeder & Tremayne Corporation said, "Honestly, I felt a little like Alice shortly after she fell down the rabbit hole. I was positively blown away." Tolsdorf's reaction is like that of most visitors. Those who visit Inventionland inevitably conclude that indeed, anything is possible.

Mr. Davison is thrilled to have his creation recognized by Ripley's. "Inventionland has been the subject of many news articles, business tours, and community events, but this mention in Ripley's is a true honor," says Davison. "I have always admired Ripley's," Davison says, "because they are a company that celebrates unique individuals and out-of-the box thinking and creativity."

Davison is a new product development company that helps inventors, corporations and entrepreneurs. Last year, the firm received two Industrial Design Excellence Awards from the Industrial Designers Society of America and BusinessWeek magazine. Ripley's Believe It or Not! book, "The Remarkable... Revealed," is available for purchase in stores and online.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://davisondesign.blogspot.com/2007/11/believe-it-or-not-inventionland.html' title='Believe it or not, Inventionland featured in Ripley's "The Remarkable... The judges for the series, PGA TOUR professional Fulton Allem, Golf Digest top-50 golf instructor Bill Harmon, and Golf for Women Senior Editor Stina Sternberg, are responsible for critiquing and paring down the initial 103 inventors to five finalists.

Alfonzo survived three anxious weeks of panel auditions and made it to the top 38. Alfonzo came to Davison with a patent and poorly designed prototype. Through Davison's Inventegration® Process, we determined that additional modifications needed to be made. We provided him with a professional product sample that he used on the show to illustrate his new product.
Founder and CEO George Davison said, "It is great to see Alfonzo getting the attention he deserves for this product. I am so proud to see him make it this far. Revealed" showcases many of the world's unique and notable people, events, and places. The Ripley's book is just another accolade for the Pittsburgh design company's one-of-a-kind workplace. Inventionland is described in the book as a "Tree-Mendous Office", a fitting name for the facility that includes a tree house, a pirate ship, and a giant robot as office space.

CEO George Davison commented, "Inventionland has been the subject of many news articles, business tours, and community events, but this mention in Ripley's is a true honor. I have always admired Ripley's because they are a company that celebrates unique individuals, and out-of-the-box thinking, and creativity."

"The Remarkable Revealed" is the latest book from Believe It or Not franchise which started in 1819 as a newspaper cartoon panel featuring unusual and startling facts from around the world. Other titles include, "World's Weirdest Gadgets", and "Odd-inary People".

Davison Design and Development is a new product development company and home of Inventionland. Last year the firm, which helps inventors, corporations and entrepreneurs, was recognized by the Industrial Designers Society of America and BusinessWeek magazine, winning two Industrial Design Excellence Awards.

New Davison product for Back to School

Introducing the Dorm Rack

With the success of the Cap Rack, Adjust a Hooks, and Purse Rack, selling over 1 Million Units combined to date, it is time for us to announce our newest over the door storage unit the Dorm Rack. Getting players from Red Sox, Knicks, Yankees and celebrities like Roberto Clemente Jr. and even Jerry Seinfeld to wear it is an even more difficult task. But for 43-year-old Alberto Spies of New York he accomplished all of this despite setbacks along the way over an eight-year period.

"I paid my dues," Spies explained. "I threw my whole life work into this. I'm surprised I did this on my own."

In 1999, Spies created the Zip Guard with the help of Davison and the Inventegration® process. Spies designed the Zip Guard with Davison to protect baseball players' forearms, while keeping their tendons tight and reducing sweat. It's perfect for batting especially, preventing vibration in the hands. However, throughout the years, the idea moved on to include basketball, tennis and other sports. Spies mentioned that it prevents scrapes on the forearm while playing basketball or when sliding into a base during baseball.

The Zip Guard also underwent ACE testing, according to Spies, for durability.

"If you put on a wrist band, it doesn't even give 10 percent of what my product does," said Spies.

Although Davison couldn't match Spies with a corporation to license his product, he used Davison's design work when he negotiated a licensing agreement on his own with Spalding. However, today, he manufacturers, distributes and markets the product on his own.

The product sold 9,000 units in a Manhattan store in one month and 200,000 units in a year in the Dominican Republic. Spies even sold 5,000 to the Knicks.

"The product is so well accepted," he said. "I've been overwhelmed. It's taken off very well."

Along with various sports players wearing the product, it's become greatly popular with artists and celebrities. He says that hip-hop artist Nelly uses the product. He's even seen comedian Jerry Seinfeld wear the product while playing tennis.

Davison worked with Spies to design and develop the Zip Guard, transforming it into a prototype ready for manufacturing. Spies said this about his experience in an e-mail to Davison:

"I came to Davison with a sketch and an idea, and before my very eyes you made it a reality. It did not come easy but because of your professional and dedicated staff my vision came to life. I would highly recommend Davison to anyone with an idea. I have to say that never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that I would make it to this level. I thank you and your staff for fulfilling my dreams."

The celebrities described within this article or depicted in the photo do not endorse Davison and its services, and, to Davison's knowledge, do not endorse the Zip Guard.

Davison Design and Development, collaborates with Pittsburgh PBS affiliate WQED for a Pittsburgh culture and lifestyle show.

Pittsburgh, PA March 29, 2007 -- Pittsburgh PBS affiliate WQED will hold interviews for its new online show in Davison Design and Development's Inventionland work environment.

"Pittsburgh inSite," a Web-based show focusing on culture and lifestyle in southwestern Pennsylvania, will feature an interview segment where host Mike Lee, former vice president of the Pittsburgh Penguins, interviews influential public figures in the Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania area, including 24 filmed in Inventionland. The Fill 'er Up Bookends accent a bookshelf or desktop with antique gas pumps in a six-inch-tall stamped steel design.

The four new products were developed in the award-winning Pittsburgh design firm's InventionLand™, the world's most creative workspace.

Davison Design Wins Local Business Award

The “Steel Heart Award” for December 2006 goes to…Davison Design & Development.

KEY Group presented Davison with the award that recognizes local people or organizations that exemplify the attributes of Vibrant Entrepreneurial Organizations.

Davison-designed Line of Interactive Mealtime Products Shipped to Wal-Mart Canada Stores

Canadian Wal-Mart stores now selling line of interactive mealtime products featuring Dora the Explorer and Go, Diego Go!, created by Pittsburgh's Davison Design and Development

In time for the holiday season, a new line of Davison Design and Development-designed interactive mealtime products, featuring the popular Nickelodeon shows Dora The Explorer and Go, Diego Go!, recently shipped to Wal-Mart Canada stores.

Davison made the unique interactive items, manufactured by Canada's Callego, to help active children focus on mealtime.

Designers at Davison found that children often become unfocused and leave the dinner table to pursue other activities, abandoning their food. The line consists of the sideshow tumbler, the dinner spinner and plate and the collapsible food tray. Each one has a Dora and a Diego version.

The sideshow tumbler, a unique interactive cup, lights up when a button at the base is pressed, which initiates a short film strip to rotate around the cup. The dinner spinner and plate allows children to spin their food with a touch of a button. Davison III, CEO and founder of Davison Design and Development.

The product design firm recently opened InventionLand™, an innovative workspace designed inside its Pittsburgh warehouse to foster creativity among its staff, known as Inventionmen™.

The more than 60,000 square foot facility uniquely features waterfalls, moats and offices on the deck of a "pirate ship," in a faux cave and in a castle. The one-of-a-kind facility was built almost entirely in-house.

"Get creative people out of cubes," said Davison, who founded the company in a basement in 1989. "If I'm going to ask these people to put their hearts, bodies and souls into a project, I'm going to recognize that, because that's a heck of a sacrifice. So, I wanted to give them the best possible place to create in."

InventionLand is composed of 15 departments divided by focus, including automotive, outdoors, juvenile, home and toys. Each department is designed to increase creativity and to offer an environment where the products being developed can be used, tested and photographed in-house.

Davison spends most of his time in Thinktank Treehouse, a workspace suspended on a large faux tree above a stream fed from a waterfall in the rear of the environment.

"InventionLand is made to inspire creative people," Davison explained. "It was built to move belief out of the intangible mental realm and into the physical world. If you're walking in it and living in it, it's easier to be creative."

In addition to the unique, creative environments, InventionLand is part of Davison's factory, producing about 200 new product samples every month. The factory focuses on package samples, prototyping and product construction. After joining Davison Design and Development in Pittsburgh, he used the design firm’s resources to design and build the pot. Davison designers are allowed to use the company’s resources and materials to build and design a personal project once a year. The Pivot Pot is a pot with a built-in strainer. It pivots on the corners, so when pasta is cooked, the pot can be tipped over a sink, draining the water and holding the pasta in place.

As a person who worked his way through Pittsburgh’s Art Institute as a cook, the idea was obvious to Kulikowski. In fact, he thought it would be perfect for restaurant use, reducing the time to prepare food. He graduated from the Art Institute in December 2005 with a degree in industrial and product design.

“I was in Kauffman’s looking at the cooking aisle,” he explained. “I just put two and two together.”

The product was licensed to Allstar Marketing, which has worked with QVC and HSN, for an advance on future royalties. When the Pivot Pot hits the market, Kulikowski will receive royalties on the project that he will share with Davison Design.

Kulikowski submitted the project to Davison Design when he first started on their award-winning design team about five months ago. He said he wanted to work on it, because he didn’t want to see the idea sit in the closet and go nowhere. What started out as the “Pasta Champ,” was later changed. He found that the design could be used for more than just pasta. He used it to steam vegetables and cook hardboiled eggs. Later it became the Pivot Pot.“I always hoped it would be licensed, but you never know until you try,” he said.

While Kulikowski had already designed and created the initial model proving that the gravity-driven project would work, he didn’t have much else when he presented it to Davison. From there he worked on the design and other Davison team members worked on graphics, engineering and the final prototype. Davison’s licensing department then worked on presenting the project to various corporations.

“When we showed it to Allstar it was an instant ‘yes, we want it,’” said Frank Vescio, vice president of licensing for Davison.Vescio noted that the design and simplicity of Kulikowski’s product made it easy to license.

Since 1989 Davison Design and Development, Inc. has produced products for inventors and corporations. It’s a cutting-edge 110,000-square foot product design and development factory; its services include research, industrial design, virtual reality, video, animation, product samples, packaging, presentation and royalty management. Davison-designed products have been sold in stores such as Home Depot, Target, JC Penney, Linens 'n Things, Sears, Dick's Sporting Goods, AutoZone, The Sports Authority, FAO Schwarz, Modell's and Dunham Sports. A take on the same idea is the Perfect Pocket, a small fabric pocket with a clip that serves as a portable home for small animals.

In addition to portable critter devices, small permanent homes are also being sold through the site. These include the Critter Cave and Mushroom Cave. Both are fabric homes for small pets to sit in shaded, low light settings. The Mushroom Cave is shaped like a mushroom, adding a decorative aspect for a pet owner’s living space. Complimenting the caves is the Critter Hangout. Similar to the Critter Cave, this small pet home can be suspended, opening more spatial options for a pet owner’s home.

Also recently introduced in the line are the Critter Net and Critter Ladder. However, Wednesday Sept. 13, that all changed. The first broadcast camera entered our doors, shining a local spotlight on our talented staff of Inventionmen.

KDKA-TV Channel 2, Pittsburgh's CBS affiliate, sent Dave Crawley to visit Davison and showcase some of our recent accomplishments.

The Daves, this includes the cameraman who is also named Dave, toured our build shop, our package engineering department and Edison's lab, documenting a small portion of our facility to air soon as a short two-minute feature, set to broadcast Monday or Wednesday.

During his time here, Crawley interviewed InventionLand Motor Speedway staff Jason Rogge and Ralph Kalkbrenner with the award-winning Hover Creeper and its various early prototypes. Crawley even took a spin, floating through the build department.

Later they met up with Anthony Keys, Trevor Kemmerer and Jarrod Campbell in packaging. The three put their heads together earlier in the day to build a poetry box, specially-designed for Crawley's “My Doggy Ate My Homework” children's poem. It was a quickly Invetegrated box that showcased our package engineering capabilities.

Following up the flute door and desk, Crawley spoke with Nathan Field on the desigining of the BikeBoard. Meanwhile, a group of Inventionmen showed off the BikeBoards, while a cameraman rode in a cart in front of them.

Click here to watch the video from KDKA

George M. Davison, 42. During the tour, the group sat down to brainstorm new product ideas with Davison.

“If we come up with something out of this,” Davison told the group, “everyone is cut in on the future royalties.”

Davison Design and Development uses its Inventegration process to turn ideas into products that can be presented to a corporation. The clients all used Davison’s exclusive method when pursuing their products.

The group of inventors included Southern California’s John Iavarone, creator of the BikeBoard, which recently earned international recognition with a bronze 2006 Industrial Design Excellence Award (IDEA). The IDEA is an annual design competition cosponsored by BusinessWeek magazine and the Industrial Designers Society of America. As well, the Hover Creeper, also designed by Davison’s team of Inventionmen, won a silver concept IDEA.

Also present for the tour was Christopher Seeley, inventor of the OverBoiler Clip; Ruth and Gary Frazier of central Pennsylvania, inventors of the Twister Caps and Twister Bolts; Florida’s Curtis Hargrove, creator of the Personal Air Freshener; Raul Rubalcava of California, inventor of the Wine Butler; and southwestern Pennsylvania’s Judith Chmielewski, creator of SAF-T – an illuminated addition to the bottom of canes and walkers.

The team of inventors created six concepts during the hour-long brainstorm. I was impressed with your modest operation on the first visit when it was located in your grandfather's home. The progress you have made and level of proficiency you have now achieved from that modest start is now beyond imagination. I am not only very impressed but thrilled to witness such a dynamic and constructive organization in action.

I have been associated with new technologies all of my professional life. Examples include the beginning of color picture tubes, where I was a key inventor, the transistor, integrated circuits, liquid crystals and high definition television. The enclosed resume provides a little of this history. Because of this background, I feel particularly qualified to assess the creative and productive capability of your organization. You turn out advances and inventions at a prodigious rate that is probably unmatched anywhere in the world.

Not only do you create your own advances, but you are flexible enough to help other inventors through the many precarious steps of turning their idea into a reality. Many inventors are not capable of, nor realize the importance of the steps of patent search, patent filing, designing a product that satisfies a need and that is readily manufactured in a cost effective manner, designing functional packaging, producing realistic prototypes of the product and the packaging, and presenting the product to the key people in the commercial world. Your organization is well versed in all of these areas and they provide a very worthwhile service.

Probably the most impressive part of your organization is the creative function. They tackle challenges in extremely diverse fields of endeavor. And now, the new workplace wherein the creative process can be conducted in a practical surrounding associated with the end use of the invention. I am sure that no other organization has even dreamed of such a positive working environment. Your facility is truly breathtaking.

I feel privileged and proud to have had the opportunity to visit your unbelievable organization. It is a living example of what makes America great. The entrepreneurial spirit and success you have demonstrated is fantastic. Your contributions benefit all of those associated with it. Even the products that don't make it in the marketplace have had a good shot.

Please accept my heartiest congratulations on the success you have achieved and on the contributions you are making to our great society. If I were a little younger, I would seriously consider applying for a position in your creative section.

Thanks again, and keep up the fabulous work!!!

Sincerely,

D. Last week, the O'Hara firm of Davison Design and Development Inc. was recognized nationally in BusinessWeek magazine for turning the idea for a skateboard-bicycle hybrid into the BikeBoard.

The BikeBoard company was founded in Newport Beach, Calif., in December 2003 by John Iavarone. He brought his idea to Davison to design the product, which combines for riders the feeling and dynamics of skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing and BMX riding. Riders push off with one foot and use the handlebars to steer. The unique hybrid bicycle-skateboard will be featured in the July 10 issue of BusinessWeek magazine, along with other IDEA winners.

It's great to see our hard work rewarded," said President and CEO G.M. Davison. "A lot of people don't associate Pittsburgh with innovative design and product development. This just shows exactly what we're doing and what we're capable of from our corner of Pennsylvania."

Some of last year's winners include the Motorola Razr, the Apple iPod Shuffle, the Nike Considered Boot and the Sony QUALIA016 Digital Camera. The BikeBoard concept was brought to the Pittsburgh firm by Southern California's John Iavarone. Davison developed an entire line of BikeBoards for The BikeBoard Company. Iavarone's products have made their way into various sporting goods and toy store chains, as well as being featured on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, The Gear Guru, American Chopper and the 2005 remake of The Bad News Bears.

The Hover Creeper, a corporate product owned and licensed by Davison, won in the concept category. It's a 14-pound floating garage creeper that uses compressed air bladders to stay afloat, making it easier for mechanics to navigate the undercarriage of a car. Davison's Ralph Kalkbrenner, a 73-year-old former Westinghouse engineer, was key in the development.

In 1997, the Davison-developed Oil Filter Gripper won a bronze IDEA.

The IDEA awards, co-sponsored by BusinessWeek and the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), recognized 27 gold, 39 silver and 42 bronze award winners from 20 countries.
